Ciné-Cité Montréal

The Government of Québec : a major partner

Montréal, 29 March 1999 - Bernard Landry, Deputy Premier and Minister of State for the Economy andFinance, and Agnès maltais, Minister of Culture and Communications, are pleased to provide financial support for the development of Ciné-Cité Montréal, situated on the site of the old Saint-Hubert army base. This production and filming centre will soon become a place of choice frequented by the leading producers and will contribute to the economic and cultural development of Québec.

" Truly impressive progress has been made in Québec's film-making and television production in the last ten years. Indeed, the industry has witnessed remarkable growth, today having a production volume of close to 600 million dollars. With Ciné-Cité Montréal, it is estimated that 75 million dollars in new foreign film-making productions will be added annually, which could permit the creation of thousands of direct and indirect jobs intended for the most part for young people," explained the Deputy Premier.

The government has agreed that SODEC will provide financing in the form of a bank guarantee for a 4-million-dollar loan from the Fonds pour l'accroissement de l'investissement privé et la relance de l'emploi (FAIRE).

"The artistic excellence and the professionalism of our creators and our production teams are today recognized around the world. I am convinced that thanks to the new and innovative facilities that soon will be available at Ciné-Cité, there will be a marked increase in the national and international development perspectives for Québec cinema, which already is in a period of intense activity," concluded Minister Maltais.
