Alexandre Tessier and Sarah Touchette

After high school, Alexandre Tessier and Sarah Touchette studied stage at Marie-Victorin College and drama at U.Q.A.M. University. Alexandre Tessier went on an international tour for a year with the DynamO Théâtre acrobatic troupe. He concentrated his practice on the various circus techniques. In the winter of 2000, Sarah Touchette completed a first diploma with a specialization in clown acting. From 2004 to 2006, she interpreted the lead role in La Nouba at the Cirque du Soleil in Orlando, Florida. Throughout their studies, the artists favoured body expression over verbal expression, leading them directly to the circus act. They now have the status of clown and professional comedian. The complementary nature of their specialities, as a duo, allows them to offer a wide and varied vision along with diversified training. Over the last three years, Alexandre Tessier and Sarah Touchette have had roles in various Cirque du Soleil productions. They have been listed in the Répertoire de ressources culture-éducation since 2002.

Proposed approach and type of activities

Go in search of the Circus

The artists are active in both shows and teaching through after-school and leisure activities. They wish to go beyond the exploration stage of circus and develop knowledge and skills. The possibility of evolving in a group promotes the progress of students in this discipline. Because circus is mainly based on physical performance, learning evolves progressively. Obviously, physical work plays a key role, but a big place is also given to the development of the creative and artistic aspects of the circus, especially through the conveying of emotions and through body movements. Each student is able to express himself in a creative manner by way of this artistic language. Through global exploration, students lean to know themselves better and to accept their strengths and weaknesses. This situation offers a perfect opportunity for development and evolution at the personal and group level.

Examples of activities

  • To bring students to discover all facets of the circus and to make known all dramatis personae like Auguste and the white clown as well as key figures from silent movies like Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton.
  • To be able to develop a certain freedom of movement through group exercises and to express themselves using their bodies through all stages of circus production.

  • The artists progressively integrate all circus techniques and adapt them to the school. These techniques include juggling, rola-bola, acrobatic gymnastics, high-wire and balancing tricks.
  • As they learn, students are able to discover the possibilities available to clowns through the various techniques. Students project themselves in a representation with the tool of their choice as part of a comic act, creating a clown's character. Depending on the needs of the teacher, the workshop can be offered as a one-time activity or a longer term learning initiative.
  • Seeking to ensure that students acquire an up-to-date knowledge of the reality of this artistic profession, the artists also convey theoretical notions to participants from the history of the circus up to the new possibilities afforded by this profession around the world. This part of the workshop highlights the circus profession and allows students to familiarize themselves with the various aspects of this art. In order to enable each student to value their abilities, participants are closely involved in every stage of the workshop.

Special conditions

The workshop must be held in the school gymnasium. The juggling material used may be offered to the school after the workshop to allow young people to continue their exercises. The material is provided by the artists at a maximum cost of $100 per day of hosted activities.
