Proposed approach and type of activities

Exploring the Creative Process with Puppets

The objective of the workshop is to discover and explore the creativity of students by way of puppets. The workshop can be divided into several sections, according to the agreement reached beforehand with the teacher. The artist begins by presenting his profession in a playful and interactive way, with several types of puppets, accompanied by music. The purpose of this short presentation is to introduce students to the art of puppeteering and make them want to participate in the making of their own puppets.

  • The students are then asked to form groups to devise short scenarios mirroring daily life, while introducing an unusual element (arrival of an alien, my mother is a giant, my father has three heads, my dog talks, etc.). Length of the scenario: about 5 minutes.
  • Young people then make their own puppet. To do this, they can begin with a drawing, followed by an identification card for each character, which each student will have created.
  • Using appropriate exercises, the artist explains certain basic manipulation techniques according to the type of puppet built.
  • Students can then add their choice of music to accompany their dramatic presentation. They will have the choice of holding the presentation before their fellow students by resorting to hidden manipulation (behind a little stage curtain) or in full view as an actor-puppeteer. Students will be able to keep their character afterwards.

Special conditions

The workshop requires various materials at the maximum cost of $100 a day.
