Presentation

Suzanne discovered mosaics back in 1993 as a hobby. Then, curious colleagues and friends asked her to show them how mosaics are made—that’s when she started teaching. She decided to take a course in Italy, a move that changed her life. She met the team at Mosaika.com in 2001, at which time she started teaching in their studio and doing small commissions for public works. She is also often invited to teach in schools. She’s been directing Mosaïkashop since 2003 and continues to do commissions and school workshops. Suzanne’s personal mosaic has been constantly evolving as she enriches her work technique and gains experience. She now exhibits regularly in Europe.

Proposed approach and type of activities

Suzanne is famous for her patience. She turned to this art form by pure chance, as she did not like what she was studying in university and so consoled herself with mosaics, which, bit by bit, became her full-time job. In her personal works, she specializes in interpreting antique oriental rugs in miniature mosaics. Such decorative works take between five and nine months to make. This subject matter came to her naturally, as she is a fan of elaborate rugs and has always had a desire to own the most famous antique ones. So now, she ‘weaves’ her personal stories in mosaic.

The workshop can be organized in two ways. This should be discussed with the teacher in charge, as Suzanne is flexible with the formulas.

Workshop 1: Creation of an individual mosaic measuring 8 x 8 inches according to their drawing. Suzanne takes care of the installation and grouting. The mosaic will be delivered to the school a week or two later.

Time requirements: a block of two hours, or it can be spread out over two weeks with one hour each. The teachers must submit the drawings before the class.

Materials: the artist offers to reshape the leftover tiles from the school’s large-scale mosaics at no cost.

Workshop 2: Creation of a collective mosaic measuring approximately 80 x 80 inches according to the children’s drawings. Suzanne takes care of the installation and grouting of the mosaic. The work is delivered within a week or two. The teachers must submit the children’s drawings before the class.

Time requirements: a block of three hours, or it can be spread out over three weeks with one hours each.

Materials: the artist offers to reshape the leftover tiles from the school’s large-scale mosaics at no cost.

Special conditions

Materials: glue, ready-cut tiles, wooden or mirror bases. Cost is estimated at $100 per day, depending on the project and the number of students.

Tables are needed to place the selection of ready-cut tiles.

It is necessary to speak with the artist in advance in order to properly plan the project, especially as pertains to colour, base and tiles or other pieces.
