For several years, Christian Ferland has been associated with renowned theatre and circus companies. When he graduated from the École nationale de cirque de Montréal in 1993, he joined the team of Dynamo Théâtre, a Québec company that offers young people an innovative and original cultural product centering on acrobatic theatre. He then went on to become a member of Cirque du monde, a humanitarian subsidiary of Cirque du Soleil, where he created and hosted workshops for young dropouts. During this period, he also gave workshops and performances in primary and secondary schools. From 2001 to 2003, he crisscrossed America in the company of his family and an amazing horse named Bohémio on tour with Cheval-Théâtre, a creation of Gilles Ste-Croix, co-founder of the Cirque du Soleil! After having traveled around the world, the artist would like to share and tell of the discoveries made, the values learned and the secret treasures amassed during a fantastic voyage, the voyage of life.
The goal of the workshop is to allow young people to acquire a better knowledge of their personality, experience and emotions by learning certain circus techniques. They will learn to trust themselves and to recognize the link that exists between them and others. The artist's teaching approach is based mainly on learning through experience and feelings, and on emotional and gestural exploration. Students will acquire technical knowledge about gestual expressions, juggling, acrobatics and clowning work. Musical rhythms and improvisation will be used by the artist to create a scene, followed by another one, followed by a string of small scenes that can lead to a series of episodes. The activity will unfold according to the following outline: - warming up through games; - experimenting with the senses and energy, and learning movement; - free improvisation; - discussion and review of the experience; - juggling and manipulating objects; - organization and individual creation; - organization and group creation; - recapping of the workshop.
The workshop requires equipment rental, at a maximum cost of $100 per day.
